
NOTIFICATION OF UNTREATED WASTEWATER DISCHARGE
On Wednesday morning, June 11, 2025, at approximately 6:30 AM, the City of Lincolnton had an accidental discharge of wastewater sludge enter the South Fork River, at the City of Lincolnton Wastewater Treatment Plant. The discharge was due to a contractor error that caused equipment failure. Approximately 150-gallons spilled into the South Fork River.
The spill does not affect the drinking water supply and the problem has been resolved. The site has been remediated. The incident was reported to the Department of Water Quality, Division of Water Resources (NCDEQ-WR).
This release has been prepared in accordance with NC General Statute 143-215.1C. This statute requires the owner or operator on any wastewater collection system or treatment works to issue a press release when an untreated wastewater discharge of 1,000 gallons or more reaches surfaces waters.
The NC Division of Water Resources has been notified of the City of Lincolnton’s incident.
